The best students do not have tutors or super powers. They are the products of good parenting and super parents.
Home and family are significant factors in student learning and achievement. As a parent, you are your child's first and most important teacher. When parents and families are involved in their children's schools, the children do better and have better feelings about going to school. In fact, many studies show that what the family does is more important to a child's school success than any other factor. There are many ways that parents can support their children's learning at home and throughout the school year.
But the question which arises in every parent’s mind is- How?
Firstly, Have hopes, dreams and ambitions for your child. Let your child know that you think it’s important they do well in school. When a parent holds high aspirations for their child, they do better at school.
Ask your child everyday what they learnt at school, or what they found interesting or fun at school.
Helping your child enjoy learning is very important. Learning could be invigorating, exciting, challenging, inspiring and FUN! If your child has a positive attitude to learning they are more likely to do well in school.
Thirdly, a very important aspect includes Praising. Always praise your child for their effort and persistence when they are reading or doing homework. Talk with your child about what’s happening at school – activities, programmes, what they are learning and even what happens in the playground. Praising and appreciating your child after every achievement will boost their morale and motivate them to do better.
Incorporate the “when you” rule. One of life’s lessons is that we get the goodies after we do the work. You get paid after you work at your job. So start saying things like, “When you finish studying you are welcome to go to Shanaya’s house.” Or “When your homework is completed, we can discuss watching that movie you wanted to see.” Enforce this rule and stick to it. By sticking to this rule, you are helping them learn how to do what their own brain is not yet equipped to do, which is to create the structure for him.
Encourage your child to read. Helping your child become a reader is the single most important thing that you can do to help the child to succeed in school-and in life. The importance of reading simply can't be overstated. Reading helps children in all school subjects. More important, it is the key to lifelong learning.
Engage your child in brain development programs like Aloha which sharpen the brain by improving focus, visualization and memory. With better focus the child will surely excel in school also. There are many factors which influence a child’s brain. A whole brain development program ensures the activation of both left and right brains thereby helping a child navigate smoothly in his everyday activities.
One more amazing technique that relieves a child of the everyday stress and helps him understand his surroundings better is Meditation. Help your child get some deep rest and allow his mind to dissolve. You would soon see a happier and a calmer kid around you. Such children turn out to be deep thinkers and problem solvers.
Children possess infinite power within themselves. All that we need to do is trust them and allow them to explore new things around and give them lots of appreciation and love to go ahead with anything that they take up.
